If you check most of the self improvement books and social media, there are so many discussions about being authentic. But what is authentic” and “authentic leadership? It simply means being true to who you are as a person. Being authentic is important as it leads to a more peaceful and happier existence. Everyone wants to be who they are for their own well being, success and credibility in life.
You may think it is easy to be authentic but it is not because people are maneuvering constantly inside their head trying to please others, achieve certain goals and sometimes just trying to stay out of trouble. The society today is unpredictable and people want to just manage the status quo rather than challenge it. Therefore, they say and speak what they do not mean at all, they hold back on the things which are true and in the end, no one truly knows the other person.
This article outlines six ways you can tell if someone is not being authentic
1) They always go with the crowd
Most people in the world today moves with the crowd mentality. When conflict is imminent and emotions are fired up, it is quite difficult to push against the momentum. An authentic leader is courageous and can have the difficult conversations. They are also ready to go against the norm hoping that something truthful and amazing will evolve even though they will have to fight with those that fail to agree with them
2) They do not keep their agreements
Keeping your agreements is very important, it shows integrity and authenticity. A person who fails to keep his or her agreement is not authentic. Here are four ways that will help you keep your agreements:
- Do not make agreements lightly, first consider all options before saying yes and say no to the non productive requests. Saying No is very critical in any business to avoid getting bogged down in doing things which are not in the best interest of the business. However, you should do so with kindness and tact respecting the other person as well as the existing relationship.
- Write all the agreements you make down to avoid forgetting.
- Set time to do the activities or actions required to keep each agreement.
- In case you are going to break any agreement made, inform the involved parties earlier instead of waiting until the last minute to give the other party time to reschedule.
3) They do not take care of themselves
Taking good care of yourself is the beginning of being able to take care of others. Your well-being is the platform in which you serve others. Good personal health is a great possession and a significant foundation for the future. You should prioritize and invest in good health as it is a long term investment that will pay off some day. Taking care of yourself and good health is also a sign of authenticity.
4) They act like perfectionist
Perfectionism kills authenticity. An authentic leader throws initiatives and ideas and allows the teams to create services and products. A perfectionist focuses on every detail and loses track on the bigger picture. A person who focuses on each minor detail will never cross the line.
Though it is important to get it right, one should keep in mind that there are different ways to get there. A business plan is perfect but the real business is not and a person who fails to make mistakes does not make anything.
5) They do not practice what they preach
Consistency is an important core value. You should do exactly what you say or avoid saying. It is inauthentic to miss deadlines you have set or use the Cobbler’s Children excuse every time. Being a man of your word displays integrity and authenticity. If your mouth cannot be trusted, then your heart cannot be followed.
6) They hold grudges
Authenticity allows for forgiveness and humanity. An authentic person grieves the losses and moves on. Grudges are not an option as they affect ones happiness. Since risks are inevitable in business and they may fail, an authentic person should grieve the losses, forgive himself and take the next solution. A person who stays stuck in the painful mistakes repeats the same mistake ultimately until the lesson is learned.
It doesn’t take long to figure out if the person you are interacting with is being authentic or not. Pay attention to what their actions are, how they handle answering questions and how they handle themselves when they are around you.
